Canoesport Paddles

Christmas Money to Spend?

Still using heavy old club paddles? Can't find the correct size? Want to go faster in 2014?

Club paddles are fine when you begin paddling with the club but if you have ambition to go further or faster you need to have your own pair. Help is at hand as Tim is offering his paddles at 2013 prices up until the last Hare and Hounds on 9 February. Speak or email me if you need any advice or if you would like to trial a pair before you place an order.

Christmas Message 2013 and Boxing Day Paddle

Jim has posted a newsletter on the website. All club members should have received an email with the link. If not (1) check your spam email box (2) contact the webmaster! Below is a sneak preview followed by details for the Boxing Day Paddle.

2013 has been as an enjoyable one at the Club following all the excitement in Great Britain and the success of London 2012. The highlights for the Club were Liam Heath, with Jonnie Schofield, winning the silver in the 200m K2 at the World Championships following the bronze at Dorney in 2012 and Anne Dickins winning the Silver in her first 'Worlds' in the LTA category, following the Gold at the Euro's. Other outstanding results were achieved by Fay, Ed, Jack, Matt, Jon and Rachel at National, European and World events.

Behind the scenes, our paddlers received great support and advice from club coaches and we thank them for this. Our 'BCU Top Club Gold', and Sport England 'Club Mark' status, reflects the high standard of coaching and club structure that exist at Wey. Keeping up with the 'Gold' standard is not easy and we constantly have to review and record our activities.

As well as our Saturday Beginners Courses, which have remained oversubscribed, new funding into 'middle' schools has enabled us to offer courses for a local school in curriculum time. This has been very successful under Mick Luck's guidance.

The Commodore and all the Committee, hope you have an enjoyable time over Christmas, and the New Year, and we look forward to good paddling, successful racing and a great facility (may be even bigger?) in 2014.

Jim Rossiter

Work off the Christmas Padding and join in on the Boxing Day Paddle! Meet at the club a bit before 11am for an 11ish start and paddle to The Parrott Inn for lunch and back. The Dress Code is "Festive attire." It would be great if someone was able to be there with a car to take dry clothing "just in case". Get in touch with Allan if you need any more information.

Putting away club boats

To all paddlers using club boats - please remember to put your boat away in the correct shed after usage... in particular those using the larger boats (generally marked with a 12) which only go in Shed 3. Attempts to ram these into racks which are too small will only cause damage and annoyance.

Tuesday 5 November 2013

Lost paddles

Dave H left his paddles (Canoe Sport adjustable B4s with the initials DNH in white on one blade where it joins the shaft) leaning against Shed 5 on Sunday and they have been "tidyied". If you have put them away somewhere could you let him know at this e-mail david (at) thehalliwellfamily.co.uk

Sprint World Championships Success

Wey Paddlers produced excellent results at the Sprint World Championships in Duisburg, Germany over the past few days.   Anne Dickens won a Silver Medal in the TA K1 category.  Mind you, Anne had a support crew to rival the Hungarians - watch this clip

Liam Heath with Jonny Schofield also won a Silver in the K2 200 improving on their Bronze in the Olympics.

Rachel finished 5th in the K1 500 - again a one place improvement on her Olympic Games position and 12th in the K1 200.

There is a write-up on the BBC website here.

Team GB supporters who travelled to Duisburg also did a magnificent job (even if I say so myself!)

Would anyone be able to host a French paddler for a few months?

If you remember Claudine - or not - one of her paddlers would like to stay in England from October 'til March, to improve his English. Wey has a really good social side, and plenty of sessions going on so is ideal for him. He is about 21 and looking for a room to rent. Also he will have a car. The period is a long time, but even if you would like to help for part of that please email Abigail at publicityofficer@weykayak.co.uk. Thanks!

Morning all, last sunday round 4 in this years " qualification for finals day" series took place at Maidstone canoe club on the river medway. We were blessed with a lovely sunny day and some exciting racing for both paddlers and the encouragingly large numbers of supporters. At the top of the tree was Phil Gunney who picked off 3rd place in a 4 way sprint finish to div 2. There was another tight finish in div 5 where Miki ...( shall I wear this camel back ? how does it work ? what nib should I use? what do I put in it? !!!! )Maciniak led for most of the way only to be pipped   on the line by fellow wey paddler Shane Houghting who was making a welcome return to club racing.Congratulations go to both on gaining promotion to div 4. Div 7 had 4 wey representatives , Nathan Tozer continued his fine run of form with a second place not only gaining promotion but retaining family seniority as Lucy who put in a great paddle to stay in touch  with the leaders  just faded in the last part.Yours truly managed 5th and young Alex Bicknell had his best paddle yet coming in 11th.
The excitement continued in div 8 where Weys juniors Sophie Thompson ,Jackou Vu and Tali Farrant were debating their various strengths and weaknesses.... as it was in div 5 Jackou led off the start line but never opened a significant gap and after the organisers had studied the photographic evidence it was sophie that was declared the winner by a "gnats whisker".  Tali coming in close behind in 4th. No promotions here though so the debating will continue ..Div 9 and Nick Brown was keen to join his friends in div 8 ...a great effort saw a second place finish but agonisingly not quite enough for promotion.....expect to see lots of effort from the juniors in practice this week!In the lightnings Sam Bicknell, Rebecca Swift and Ella Banks were all displaying there skills with Sam producing the performance of the day to win the u10 race. Our sole representatives in k2 were family Haliwells Dave and James and they showed perfect unison to finish 2nd after a hotly debated race with richmonds boat...As the dust settled on another fine/fun days racing the points showed that Wey had finished 2nd again. Next race is this sunday 9th june on the the Thames at Royal canoe club It will be great to see lots of you there.
