Part 2........on sunday the second of this years races for qualification to the finals of the interclub hasler competition took place at Tonbridge canoe club. With an assessment race taking place on the same day Weys representation in Divisions 1-6 was limited to just Dave Martyn who duly collected the maximum 20 pts...conversely div 7 was stacked with 6 paddlers young and older(!)...Nathan Tozer finished 3rd and took bragging rights within the club whilst Tom Goldsack( 7th) led Samantha Martyn home amongst the juniors. In div 8 congratulations go to Alex Bicknell who finished 2nd and gained promotion to div 7 ....Tali Farrant finished a very creditable 3rd . Nick Brown came 4th in div 9 just missing promotion by one spot whilst Richard Perkins in his 1st race for the club gained a useful 13pts coming in 8th......The club also had a very useful k2 competing in div 7 where James Halliwell and Angus Cameron -Blackie won a two horse race comfortably and collected 40pts.....It was great to see Rebecca Swift and Sam Bicknell in the junior lightning races giving their all and hopefully they will be joined by more children at future races. When the points were added up Wey had garnered a total of 197 which left us in 2nd place on the day to Tonbridge. The next race in the series is at Maidstone on sunday week ....the 2nd of june..... It would be great to see more club paddlers there and to see if we can replicate the clubs performance at the 1st race hosted by ourselves when as Calum reported we collected a near maximum no of points and finished 1st.
elmbridge sprints and 1066 hastings hasler
Good morning all, a bit tardy this section but sat may the 8th saw a collection of wey junior paddlers and senior supporters head to elmbridge for an excellent afternoons racing . 200 and 500m time trials followed by races of the same distances were the order of the day followed by a k2 and k4 race (tee hee! ) All acquitted themselves very well, Tali Farrant heading the pack followed by Jackou Vu and a 3way tie between Sam Martyn, Sophie Thompson and Nick Brown. Creditable performances, also came fromKuba Cranmer, Lizzie Hillier, Dawn Richards, Kasper Cranmer and Rebecca Swift. Now.. I had never seen a k4 race and so confess to being quite excited as the crews make up began to be discussed and the handling / entering of such long boats on the water took place! .....who is meant to get in first! Wey had two boats The "A" and the "B" Team. Both boats made a good start but as expected Sam, Lizzie,Sophie and Nick led Rebbeca,Casper,Tali and guest by 50yds or so when they came back into view before rounding the small island to the finish....and then the "A" team were paddling round the final bend...only ..they missed the proverbial apex ...and carried straight on out of view presumably into a handy run off area....Team "B" weren't slow to spot the opportunity..completeing a perfect turn before upping the stroke rate in a desparate sprint for the finish...team"A" reappeared lacking a bit of composure !....and in a grandstand finish it was team "B" that won the day...the smile on rebeccas face said it all.A great end to a top day and thanks to elmbridge for the organisation.

The GWC 400 Club draw
...was made on 2 May again by Geoff Eyles, a Presiding Officer for local Elections. The monthly draw winning ticket was No. 171.
We would encourage all members and friends of the GWC clubs to join the GWC 400 Club. All profits go to paying off the Waterside Centre's loans and proposed developments at the Centre.
Full details on how to join can be found on the Wey Kayak Club website www.weykayak.co.uk Each 'ticket' cost just £2.00 a month and can be paid for by monthly Standing Order if more convenient.

Wey Marathon
2013
Thank you to everybody who helped to make Sunday a
very good day, some who paddled as well. We had 250 paddlers on the
water; may be a record, including over 60 from the Club.
The canteen was flat out all day. Jill tells
me I cannot have bacon for 2 weeks as she is sick of the sight of it!
Other than a few issues with paddlers using the
wrong number or who decided to race in the wrong division, (therefore taking a
lot of time to sort out and correct!) all went very well.
Wey had some very good results on the day showing
that our youngsters are improving all the time, which is what it is all
about, of course.
Ed won Div 2 and Joe was 3rd. They both may end up
in Div 1……
Fay was second in Div 3 with the fastest ladies
time. Robert was 2nd in Div 4 and is promoted.
Joe S in his C1 was 3rd in 5 just missing promotion.
Miki won Div 6 and is promoted.
Emily was 4 in Div 7 and may be promoted.
Lucy won Div 8 and is promoted as is Samantha who was 8th, just in front of Mick Luck who escaped by the skin of his teeth!!!!
Jackou (4th) and Sophie (5th), Talitha (7th) and Jessica (8th) were all promoted from 9 to 8.
Eilis & Ottie won Div 8 K2 in a time to put them 3rd in Div 7 K2 so they may also be promoted….
A great effort and set of results all round.
Let’s hope we can continue and win some National
Trophies again this year.
Cheers again to all.
Jim
