Thursday 6 June 2013

Morning all, last sunday round 4 in this years " qualification for finals day" series took place at Maidstone canoe club on the river medway. We were blessed with a lovely sunny day and some exciting racing for both paddlers and the encouragingly large numbers of supporters. At the top of the tree was Phil Gunney who picked off 3rd place in a 4 way sprint finish to div 2. There was another tight finish in div 5 where Miki ...( shall I wear this camel back ? how does it work ? what nib should I use? what do I put in it? !!!! )Maciniak led for most of the way only to be pipped   on the line by fellow wey paddler Shane Houghting who was making a welcome return to club racing.Congratulations go to both on gaining promotion to div 4. Div 7 had 4 wey representatives , Nathan Tozer continued his fine run of form with a second place not only gaining promotion but retaining family seniority as Lucy who put in a great paddle to stay in touch  with the leaders  just faded in the last part.Yours truly managed 5th and young Alex Bicknell had his best paddle yet coming in 11th.
The excitement continued in div 8 where Weys juniors Sophie Thompson ,Jackou Vu and Tali Farrant were debating their various strengths and weaknesses.... as it was in div 5 Jackou led off the start line but never opened a significant gap and after the organisers had studied the photographic evidence it was sophie that was declared the winner by a "gnats whisker".  Tali coming in close behind in 4th. No promotions here though so the debating will continue ..Div 9 and Nick Brown was keen to join his friends in div 8 ...a great effort saw a second place finish but agonisingly not quite enough for promotion.....expect to see lots of effort from the juniors in practice this week!In the lightnings Sam Bicknell, Rebecca Swift and Ella Banks were all displaying there skills with Sam producing the performance of the day to win the u10 race. Our sole representatives in k2 were family Haliwells Dave and James and they showed perfect unison to finish 2nd after a hotly debated race with richmonds boat...As the dust settled on another fine/fun days racing the points showed that Wey had finished 2nd again. Next race is this sunday 9th june on the the Thames at Royal canoe club It will be great to see lots of you there.
