Frank luzmore reflections and upcoming races
Hi all, last sunday 19 people from the club took part in the Frank Luzore K2 race down the thames from elmbridge to Richmond.....with various concerns being discussed of cold weather or rough water the biggest problem threatened to be the fog !!......with the start delayed by the large numbers ( over 100 boats) conditions improved and were in fact about as good as they could be for this time of year..The start line for the senior races was spiced up a little by the Team GB sprint girls including the clubs Rachel Cawthorn coming out to play...in the event however first club member over the finish line was Fay Lamph paddling with Tim Pendle from Norwich followed by a very commendable effort from the pairing of Rob Williams /Bob Poole...... There was a fine performance in the senior mens B race from Dave and Jordan Martyn who finished 3rd in class although their time of 1hr 29 mins 54secs was just pipped by the veteran pairing of Pete Gorman /Dave Haws . It was great to see Laurence Fortescue and Chris Carson finishing well ..in deed the only down note was provided by Dave halliwell / Helen Weston who as Helen so aptly described had a " not our finest moment, moment" when deciding to test the temperature of the water before the start and obviously not satisfied they had it correct tried again just after the second portage..... fortunately, although tired and cold all ended well ...thanks should go to various club members that turned up to support..it always makes the day more enjoyable..

GWC 400
The GWC 400 Club draw for January 2015 was made by Dave Cox, the project site manager on 8 January. The monthly draw winning ticket for £50 was No.186 .
We would encourage all members and friends of the GWC clubs to join the GWC 400 Club. With the granting of the planning permission for the new extensions and with it, the purchase of the total grass area by the Centre on a very long lease, we are into a new phase of fund raising.
All profits from the 400 Club go to paying off the current Guildford Waterside Centre's loans and fund raising for the new developments at the Centre.
The contract for the works for the Main Hall extension and the New Kayak Store started on 5 January together with the New Kayak Store. If all goes well and funds come in, we hope to be finished by Easter 2015.
Full details on how to join can be found on the Wey Kayak Club website www.weykayak.co.uk. They are also attached here.
Each 'ticket' cost just £2.00 a month and can be paid for by monthly Standing Order if more convenient.
Cheers
Jim Rossiter
Looking good for Hare & Hounds tomorrow
Conditions are looking good for tomorrow's H&H and we're looking forward to seeing you at the club. Works have started on the new kayak shed, so parking on the grass is restricted. Please drop off boats at the club and park in the Jarvis Centre (about 200m past the club).

A Message From Rob Green
It is with some regret that I have decided to give up kayaking. Due to the fact that I use a wheelchair and also utilise my arms/shoulders to get out of chairs etc when wearing my prosthesis the surgeon wants me to try to 'manage' the situation until the operation becomes absolutely necessary. I have been able to do this quite successfully, but it does prohibit any exercise where my hand is held around shoulder level for a sustained length of time. Hence some gym work and pushing the upper arm through on a forward paddle stroke causes a problem. I was sad about this for a while as I greatly enjoyed my brief return to the water, but it is most definitely not the end of the world. I actually feel worse for all the people whom went out of their way to help me! The Wey Kayak Club as a whole is wonderfully friendly organisation and I would like to extend my thanks to the following people: Roy Fieldus, Mike Walsh, Phil Gunney, Claire Gunney, Jim Rossiter, Richard Nievien, Ben Paladino, David Kitching, Claire Hubbard (MS sports therapist), Anne Dickens and anybody else my pea brain has neglected to remember. Particularly I would like to thank Jonathon West for his time and skill spent converting the steering on the boat. And mostly I would like to give a massive thanks to my coach Dave Battershall for his limitless patience, insight and enthusiasm! I wish all members of Wey Kayak Club all the best for 2015.
