Junior and U23 European Sprint Championships

A nice sunny start to the day in France saw a fantastic performance from Phoebe Ayres win her semi final and she will race in the A final tomorrow. By 11.30 the rain was coming down and with the weed in the water we all had to remind ourselves we weren't in Nottingham! Joe Hayman-joyce, Jack Childerstone and Mike Lambert all made it into their respected semi finals which were contested at the end of the day and have made it through to the B finals tomorrow.

June Nottingham Sprint Regatta

Kinder weather meant a much better weekend of racing at Nottingham this month and led to promotions for Phoebe to Women's A, Cesar to Boys' B and Tali to Girls' C.   Rachel also managed to break her own K1 500 course record setting a new time of 1:55.05.  Watch the video here.

Less than One month to go.

The Guildford Lions Raft Race is on Saturday 5th July 2014

WKC entered 7 rafts a couple of years ago and won 7 trophies.

WKC has a store of plastic barrels, wood, rope and paddles, and we have a short video on how to build/or not build the best floating raft.

We need you to help us raise funds for the WKC, Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Group Guildford and the Guildford Waterside Centre to assist with the redevelopment.

So, find 4-8 people who want to make a team and build a raft and raise funds, via friends, family, colleagues and company sponsorship.

If you have a team then please tell Sonja at the Club on Saturday morning/lunchtime or email Fundraising@weykayak.co.uk

The Raft Race is a fun event for participating rafters and spectators. Homemade rafts made from bits and pieces of timber and old barrels make a spectacular start from Millmead and then paddle along the River Wey to the Waterside Centre near Woking Road. Anyone with a team of 4 to 8 rafters can enter a raft. Entry is £20 and we expect each raft to raise at least £100 for our charity funds.
This a great event community charity activity to participate in for team building and fun.
Entry forms and the rules for raft building and participation are available on our website www.guildfordlions.com  If you need further information please contact John Fellows Tel 01483 5460456 or  jwfellows@hotmail.com

GWC400

The GWC 400 Club draw for June was made on 31 May by a Anne Dickins the European Champion for Women Paracanoeing, a Wey Kayak Club members. The June Bonus ticket for £100 was No. 101 and the monthly draw winning ticket for £50 was No. 191.

We would encourage all members and friends of the GWC clubs to join the GWC 400 Club.  With the granting of the planning permission for the new extensions and with it, the purchase of the total grass area by the Centre on a very long lease,  we are into a new phase of fund raising.

All profits from the 400 Club go to paying off the current Guildford Waterside Centre's loans and fund raising for the new developments at the Centre.  It is anticipated that the work on the Main Hall extension and the New Kayak Shed will start in September.

Full details on how to join can be  found on the Wey Kayak Club website www.weykayak.co.uk

Each 'ticket' cost just £2.00 a month and can be paid for by monthly Standing Order if more convenient.

National Go Canoeing Week

Thanks to everyone who recorded the distance they paddled over the previous nine days (Saturday 24 May to Sunday 1 June). In all 77 members of Wey Kayak Club completed 2387 km, or 1492 miles in old money. This was registered on the Go Canoeing website. Unfortunately this appears to have taken the website by suprise as it replied with the following message:

"Thank you for submitting your mileage. As your club's total is a little higher than we expected, we'll need to confirm the distance you have completed before adding it to our website. Your submission has been saved".

We'll wait and see!

Funny as there are lots of names missing, possibly put off by the lack of poster space, because they were competing internationally or maybe they are just keeping their training a secret! I wonder what the true total might have been!
